In 1999, JCB launched
J/SmartTM, JCB's own credit application
for smart cards, which is compliant with
the de-facto global standard EMV. Following
successful pilot projects, JCB took the
initiative to lead the Japanese industry
by beginning the full-scale rollout of
JCB smart cards in 2001. JCB is also pushing
ahead both domestically and internationally
with enhancing the payment network infrastructure
to support smart card services.

Simultaneously
JCB is deploying the J/SecureTM payer
authentication program for Internet
shopping where there is no physical
card present. The program adds an
important password identification
step to verify the identity of the
person entering the card information.
These new technologies offer significantly
improved security, helping to protect
merchants from fraud losses and increase
consumer confidence in credit card
payment.

JCB is taking the initiative
in the highly advanced area of biometric
authentication as well. One recent pilot project implemented fingerprint verification for mobile access to personal information and card use history on MyJCB, the JCB cardmember site providing services over the internet including balance and transaction inquiries, card loan applications, and address and other cardmember information update capability. Another project is a permanent implementation of fingertip blood vessel vertication for both access control and credit card payment at a condominium complex scheduled to open in March 2005. |
